Sculpture by the Sea celebrates it’s 13th year

Sydney is one of the few cities in the world that can actually pull off a seaside, outdoor art exhibition for the masses. Sculpture by the Sea is definitely an event that brings art to the people.
A small group of us from the Canadian Australian Club attended last weekend, joining thousands of Sydney-siders and many [...]

ARRRRRRRR…we be Pirates again this year

Happy Halloween to all – we participated in the 2nd Annual Canadian Australian Club Pirate Pub Crawl again this year with a dozen or so other pirate. Needless to say, we made an impression trying to commandeer boats moored in Darling Harbour. All good fun!

Volunteering

Volunteering is commonly understood as the practice of people working on behalf of others without being motivated by financial or material gain
No material or financial gain? Then what is it that makes us do it? What are the deciding factors in making a commitment to invest our time, energy, ideas?
I’ve asked a lot of people [...]

A Blessing or a Curse?

…this month’s article for the Canadian Australian Club newsletter…
I’m almost done, Almost French, a book I discovered at last month’s book exchange. While it was a small group, those who participated brought a variety of novels. We had our choice of dramatic and comedic works of fiction. One that immediately spoke to me was a [...]

Canadian Australian Club website gets extreme makeover!

I haven’t been blogging much lately. And, no, it’s not just because I’m on twitter (okay, that may have a bit to do with it). The truth is, Chris and I (but mainly Chris) have been busy building the new Canadian Australian Club website. We had the official launch party last night and everyone seems [...]

The Canadian Australian Club has a New President…Chris!

Chris, I’m so very proud of you for stepping up and taking on this role. Your willingness to devote your time, energy and support to this group just makes me love you more. Congratulations on your new post, Mr. President. I guess this means I’m the First Lady!

Another month, another article written for the Canadian Australian Club member newsletter…here’s your  sneak peek…

Christmas Traditions Old and New, Linda Johannesson – December 2008
While I was in Sydney last Christmas, it was only 3 weeks after I first arrived. Christmas hit amid a blizzard of activity, dramatic life changes, uncertainty, new experiences, foreign faces, great [...]

Pirates RULE…

Smiles from hundreds of strangers. Japanese tourists asking for photos. Dozens of passers-by greeting us with a hearty ”Arrghhhh”. Our misguided attempt to abscond with a ship. Live streaming portions of the night. Heaps of laughs. A flat battery. One very funny “trick” involving a 5 cent piece. Captain Jack’s late night rail rescue. New friends. Eight pubs in [...]

Sculpture by the Sea

In Sydney, so many activities are held outside simply because… you can. Yesterday we took in the annual Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. Chris and I figured that rather than go just on our own, we’d extend the invitation to the Canadian Australian club and hope a few others would join us. We were happy to meet [...]
